La Grange is a suburb of Chicago
located in Cook County, Illinois. The community first came into being in the
1830s after the City of Chicago's corporation in 1837 caused a major population
boom in the area. The land first belonged to Franklin
Dwight Cossitt, a native of Granby, Connecticut who had been raised in La
Grange, Tennessee. After naming the original post office
"Kensington," Cossitt discovered that a town in Illinois already
existed with this name, and he instead named it after his childhood home in
Tennessee.
