Lombard is a
suburb of Chicago located in DuPage County, Illinois. Sharing much of its
history with nearby Glen Ellyn, the arrival of the Galena
and Chicago Union Railroad in 1848 provided farmers and merchants with direct
access to Chicago, causing population and commercialization to skyrocket in the
area. In 1891, Ellen
Martin led a group of women to a successful petition for women's suffrage
rights in Lombard. By 1916, women in Illinois were allowed to vote in national
elections, even though the 19th Amendment (Women's Suffrage Amendment) was not
passed until four years later.
