Lyons is a
village and suburb of Chicago located in Cook County, IL. Though it was not
incorporated until 1888, Lyons has much earlier roots, dating back to the 1673 voyage
of French explorer Louis Joliet and missionary Père Jacques Marquette. Guided
by the local Potawatomi Indians, Joliet and
Marquette discovered a short cut to the north and west from the Mississippi
River to the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers, leading to a half-mile wide piece
of land connecting to the Chicago River. This became known as the "Chicago Portage," and is
responsible for Chicago becoming a center of international trade.
