Melrose Park is a
village and suburb of Chicago located in Cook County, Illinois. Originally
named Proviso Township, local residents decided to rename it
"Melrose" in 1882, adding the "Park" in 1893. After World
War I, many large manufacturing companies began to set up shop in Melrose Park
due to its strategic location next to the Proviso freight yards. Many of these businesses
still operate in Melrose Park today, including cosmetics company Alberto-Culver,
and Stern Pinball, Inc., the world's
last remaining manufacturer of coin-operated pinball machines.
